With the cost of groceries, it’s more important than ever to make them go further
With the cost of groceries rising and household budgets tighter than ever, many families are looking for ways to shop smarter, plan better and still enjoy healthy, satisfying meals. To support Hull residents, a series of free workshops have been designed to help households eat well for less.
Whether you’re cooking for one, or feeding a family of five, these friendly and practical sessions offer simple, hands-on tips to help you make the most of your food shop and feel more confident in the kitchen. Led by trained facilitators, the workshops explore everything from budgeting and meal planning to low-cost cooking ideas and healthy swaps.
They’re designed to suit busy parents and families on a budget and any carers looking to improve how they manage their food shop. Cllr Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said “We know that many people are feeling the pressure of rising food costs, especially families trying to provide healthy meals on a budget.
“These workshops are about giving residents practical skills that make a real difference. From planning meals and shopping smarter, to preparing nutritious food without breaking the bank.
“They’re informal, friendly, and open to everyone. You don’t have to be struggling to benefit, anyone can pick up new tips, share ideas and feel more confident in the kitchen”.
The workshops aren’t just cooking classes; they are life skills workshops. The focus is on giving people the confidence to make informed choices about what they buy, how they store food, and how to prepare meals that are healthy, tasty and affordable.
The workshops are completely free to attend and take place at Family Hubs across the city. Spaces are limited, so booking is essential. You don’t need to be referred, just go along, learn something new and leave with tips that can help your household straight away.
