Changes are afoot at the Cottingham venue described as a lively community pub which is much-loved by locals

A popular village pub praised for its food has closed its doors to undergo an exciting transformation. The Hallgate Tavern is a lively community pub in the heart of Cottingham, much-loved by locals as the perfect place to relax with a drink, some food, or to watch the latest fixture.

Now the venue has temporarily called time, to make way for a refurbishment before reopening as a ‘Grandstand’ sports pub. The makeover transformation represents a significant investment of over £350,300.

New features are being put in place in the pub, designed to serve up a stadium-style experience, including the installation of new technology such as new 3m-long and 1.8m-tall screens, sound systems, and tiered seating. The outdoor area is also set to be refurbished, adding new TV screens. And locals will be able to order through the new Marston’s ‘Order & Pay’ app.

Meanwhile, The Hallgate Tavern is being decorated with local sports memorabilia and bosses are calling upon the community to share photographs and items that can play a part in the new-look pub, while also celebrating the achievements of local sports stars and teams.

Marston’s said it had picked the Hallgate Tavern for the ‘Grandstand’ transformation because of its involvement with local sports teams, community groups, and charities, saying the refurbishment will create an exciting new proposition for local sports fans from Cottingham and beyond.

Pub partner, Ioannis Grammenos, said: “We will have some amazing new technology, food and drink offers and events, and we want as many local people to be featured on our walls as possible. We can’t wait to welcome all our regulars and some new faces in to see the new and improved Hallgate Tavern.”

The pub will show all key sporting fixtures, including football, rugby, cricket, tennis, F1, darts, horse racing, and more. Dart boards and pool tables will return, alongside new competition leagues and free-to-play sessions. A new range of bar food has been introduced, including the ‘Match Day Menu’ featuring chicken wings and nachos, alongside pub favourites such as fish and chips and burgers.

The drinks menu is also set for some changes, and all draught beer is available in two-pint cups. Marston’s added that local sports teams can apply for a ‘Black Card’, giving them access to exclusive offers, endless chips on team nights, and rewards for celebrating wins at the pub.

The Hallgate Tavern will reopen on Monday February 18.
