Simon PatternHull Minster is to undergo an inspection this week after part of its roof became loose.
The area around the Grade I listed building was partially closed on Saturday afternoon after concerns were raised by a member of the public.
Firefighters said they removed part of a damaged finial – a stonework ornament – which was 32ft (10m) above ground.
The Reverend Canon Dr Dominic Black said: “Our architect and stonemason will be attending on Tuesday to assess.”
Black said the loose finial was on the “north church side lower roof”.
He added: “The top section has been taken down, but as a precaution the car park will be closed and the back section of the North Nave will be closed until it is stabilised.”
Last year, the minster celebrated its 600th anniversary, with a survey finding “no major issues with the fabric of the building”.
The fire service said it had passed the matter on to the council, while clergy said it had moved Hull Minster’s Sunday services to nearby St Mary’s in Lowgate.
