Tide conditions made for a difficult response which involved the coastguard rescue helicopter and paramedics

Humber Rescue has told of the challenging conditions it faced to save a person from the Humber in a “fast-moving” emergency. Volunteers were called out yesterday (Wednesday) to an incident in the vicinity of the river.

At around 3:30pm a team of four from Humber Rescue were dispatched by Humber Coastguard. A casualty had entered the water shortly before the lifeboat was launched.

What would normally have been a short trip for the crew turned into a longer trip due to the state of the tide. The rescue team took double the time to reach the person and the coastguard rescue helicopter was also sent to the scene.

The casualty is reported to have got a hold of a lifeline but could not be brought into land due to the difficult location. The helicopter was unable to winch them up but remained overhead in case the situation became worse.

Shortly afterwards Humber Rescue arrived at the scene and helped the person into the lifeboat before returning to its boathouse. Paramedics took charge of the casualty who was described as wet and cold but not suffering from serious injuries.

The person was then taken to hospital. A Humber Rescue spokesperson said: “This incident could very easily have had a far more difficult outcome. Conditions on the river were challenging, and access to the casualty was not straightforward.

“Thanks to the speed of response and strong joint working between all emergency services involved, the situation was brought to a safe conclusion. We’re proud of how our volunteers responded and we wish the casualty all the very best.”
