Brough is anticipating the arrival of its first ever Lidl
A town in the East Riding of Yorkshire is anticipating its first Lidl supermarket with the discount retailer welcoming customers as early as this week.
Lidl is celebrating moving into new premises in Brough, with the shiny new shop set to be one of 19 opening at the start of this year.
In the coming weeks, the discount retailer says it is increasing its presence even further across the UK, particularly highlighting the new Brough store as the town’s first-ever store.
While 640 jobs will be created across the dozens of new Lidl’s, it says up to 40 jobs have been created for the East Yorkshire town store.
The new shop will welcome customers for the first time as of Thursday (January 15), this week, reports HullLive.
The supermarket will be open from 8am with a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council and pupils from Welton Primary School.
The store will be open from 8am–10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am–4pm on Sunday.
It will also feature Lidl’s popular in-store bakery and ‘Middle of Lidl’ aisle, as well as customer facilities including toilets with baby-changing stations. Outside, there will be a 112-space car park with including electric vehicle chargers and space for bicycles.
The store is located on the land North of the roundabout where Welton Road meets Moor Road and Myrtle Way.
Liam Schofield, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, said: “We’re thrilled to be joining the community in Brough and are excited to welcome the first shoppers through our doors. We’ve been creating Lidl fans across Yorkshire and are excited to now bring our much-loved products to shoppers here.
“Thank you to everyone who has played a part in helping to make this store a reality. It’s always an exciting moment when we’re finally able to see our plans come to life and make a difference to local communities.”
Meanwhile, Lidl continues to expand across other regions of the UK for the first time, not only in Yorkshire but in Calne in Wiltshire too after celebrating opening its 1,000th store last year.
It hopes to add around another 40 sites in the year to February 28 and is investing £43 million in revamping more than 70 shops across the UK.
Changes as part of the store overhaul include new tills and larger freezers to offer a larger range of products.
It is also launching new energy-saving features, such as chillers that use natural refrigerants and smart lighting systems that reduce electricity use.
Richard Taylor, chief real estate officer at Lidl’s UK operations, said: “We’re starting the new year as we mean to go on, with a major investment that reinforces our commitment to delivering the best experience for customers and creating a positive impact for the communities we serve.
“With this push, we’re set on winning more shoppers across the nation and claiming an even bigger share of the market.”
Lidl is currently Britain’s sixth-largest grocery chain, according to experts at Worldpanel, after making the biggest market share gains in the sector in recent months.
Experts believe Lidl could overtake rival Morrisons, which is currently in fifth place, in the coming months if its current momentum continues.
Recent figures from the group showed it enjoyed a strong Christmas, with a 10% surge in sales seeing it notch up more than £1.1 billion in turnover in the four weeks leading up to Christmas Eve.
