This month marks the centenary of A.A. Milne’s beloved book series

The centenary of A.A. Milne’s beloved Winnie the Pooh book series will be marked with a series of events in Beverley over the next month. Henry the bear – a close friend of Winnie the Pooh – will be hiding in shop windows around the town and prizes are up for grabs for those who spot him. A special Pooh-themed film screening, story time at Beverley Library and a performance from the East Riding Concert Orchestra will also mark the occasion.

Beverley Town Council said the “heart of the celebrations” will be the town-centre treasure hunt. Those wanting to take part can pick up a treasure map from Beverley Tourist Information at the Treasure House between Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, November 15. Prized winners will be selected at random from the completed sheets that are returned to the information site.

On Monday, September 26, the first day of half term, Disney’s 2011 Winnie the Pooh film will be screened as a one-off special at Parkway Cinema. The screening begins at 11am and tickets are available through the cinema.

For the little ones, Beverley Library will be running Winnie the Pooh Storytime at 10.30am on October 13 and a Winnie the Pooh Bounce and Rhyme session on October 16 at 10am. These are aimed at children under the age of five and are free.

Beverley Library will also run a map-making workshop for youngsters, based on Hundred Acre Wood. Details for this will be listed on the East Riding Libraries’ What’s On website.

Join East Riding Concert Orchestra for its Listener’s Choice concert at Parkway Cinema on Saturday, October 17 at 7.30pm. Not only will there be music from the Winnie the Pooh films over the years, there will be other audience-requested music from Les Misérables, Pirates of the Caribbean and Phantom of the Opera.

The next generation of storytellers will be picking up their pens and writing their own stories inspired by the works of A.A. Milne. Students at Longcroft School will be writing their own tales and a selection of this work will be published on the Beverley Town Council website in early 2027.

Cllr Cheryl Giles, Mayor of Beverley, said: “Winnie-the-Pooh has been loved by generations of children and adults, inspiring wonderful memories, reading and imagination. I’m delighted that Beverley Town Council has been able to bring together so many local organisations and businesses to celebrate this special centenary. My thanks go to everyone involved for helping create such a varied programme, and I hope families across Beverley enjoy taking part.”

Sonia Carvill, Longcroft School’s librarian and literacy manager, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to engage creatively with the work of A.A. Milne and to discover how much their own ideas can grow from the stories they read. Writing their own Pooh-inspired stories will encourage them to use their imagination, develop their confidence as writers and see the enjoyment that can come from creating stories for others to share.”
