‘To finally be able to run on the original track bed is particularly exciting’
Yorkshire Wolds Railway (YWR) at Fimber Halt, Fimber, in East Yorkshire will formally launch its extension into “field three” on Sunday, October 18. Construction of the extension started in April and the lengthened journey will now see trains running on what was the actual track bed of the original Malton and Driffield Junction Railway.
Ivan Merino, infrastructure director said: “It’s very exciting to be able to launch this section of track. Our members have worked in all weathers to get the extension finished and have done a great job. To finally be able to run on the original track bed is particularly exciting.”
Phil Robson, finance director, said: “It’s going to be a great day with a lot happening. We have the formal launch of the extension at 10.45am with a small ceremony and special train departing at 11am.
“In addition we will be joined by Andy Dunning who will be bringing 20 static engines to show, including three of the Lister type D that will be celebrating its 100th birthday on October 12.
“Not only that but the Spurn landship [a wooden, wind-powered transport vehicle used on a military light railway at Spurn Point] will also be on static display. We really have tried to make the extension launch a special one and we look forward to welcoming many visitors to the site.”
The YWR will be running trains and opening the visitor centre every Sunday until the end of October and the Wednesday of the October half-term holiday, from 10am to 4pm. All trains run subject to availability.
Outside of school holidays, the visitor centre only will be open every Wednesday until the end of October from 10am to 4pm. Additionally, there are members on site most Saturdays who will be happy to show what is being done, subject to safety requirements.
YWR has grown from a passionate vision to a heritage railway destination, preserving a key piece of local railway history on the former Malton and Driffield Junction Railway. Entirely volunteer-run, the railway has welcomed thousands of visitors since launch, offering a unique glimpse into East Yorkshire’s rail heritage with regular train rides, and an informative visitor centre.
The YWR is always keen to involve new people, and anyone interested in becoming a member or volunteering, making a donation or just finding out more can visit the Yorkshire Wolds Railway website or call 01377 338053 for more information.
