Cayless is due to arrive in east Hull in three weeks

Nathan Cayless won’t be too concerned about the Hull KR expectation that comes with being the man to succeed from Willie Peters at Craven Park.

That’s the belief of Rovers CEO Paul Lakin, with the former New Zealand international to be given the time and space he needs to make his mark and find his own groove in east Hull.

Cayless will arrive at the club in three weeks, with pre-season getting underway the week after and the head coach has already been working hard to ensure the preparation and planning is in place for when he arrives.

He’ll be joined at Rovers by three new signings too, with Salesi Ataata, Moala Graham-Taufa and Eddie Hampson freshening things up ahead of the 2027 and further signings, once he has got a firm grip of the current squad at his disposal, have not been ruled out either.

Indeed, Cayless will be given all the tools he needs in order to do the job and Lakin insists the incoming head coach won’t spend too much time thinking about what has gone before.

“I don’t think it plays too much on his mind,” Lakin told Hull Live about the expectation on Cayless. “I think he will know that he is coming to a club where he has the full support of me and the board.

“We’re what I would describe as a really sensible club who are not known for making any knee jerk reactions at all.

“He has got our full support and I don’t think he will be thinking that and he’ll be confident of his own abilities and he’ll rightfully get the time to implement what he wants to implement.”

Lakin added: “He’s putting his own stamp on things and he’s making tweaks rather than anything else, it’s what he wants to do. I really like that.

“It’s important that he’s his own man, really important and I think a fresh voice is no bad thing after four years. I have absolutely no doubt that the players will respond to him as a coach and a man and the former player that he was.

“He’s not had to do a tremendous amount of recruitment work. He identified certain players early that he wanted to bring in and the areas he wanted fresh legs and that’s what we’ve done.

“I think he needs the opportunity first to work with the boys in training. I can’t say that he’s discussed with me that he has a premediated idea of this is how we’re going to play.

“He’s talked to me about style of player and what he wants out of his players but in terms of play, that’s for him to decide with his coaches.”
