The new venue will offer locally brewed real ales from smaller local suppliers
A former jewellers in Beverley is going to be transformed into a new micro-pub, after planners gave the idea the go-ahead. The venue will open up on Saturday Market in the town centre and will bring to life a building that has stood empty for more than five-years.
The plan will see what was Prescott Jewellers on Saturday Market being turned into a small public house, with an extension to the rear increasing space for customers. It is a distinctive historic property in part of Beverley with a good footfall, next door to the Yorkshire Building Society.
It is believed the front of the building dates back to the mid-late 19th century, with planners believing it was built by local architect William Hawe. Many interesting features remain inside the building, including tongue and groove panelling and an old inglenook fireplace.
The plans were given the green light by East Riding Council. It will see the creation of a bar and seated area on the ground floor, the installation of a small lift, and the construction of a cellar for beer and toilets for customers will be built too.
The new venue will offer locally brewed real ales from smaller local suppliers. One comment in favour of the application shared hopes that it will be a ‘traditional establishment serving a range of good value real ales similar to the award-winning Goodmanham Arms, near Market Weighton, so not a rowdy, youth-orientated late night sports bar’.
Another comment in favour of the plan pointed to Beverley’s thriving food & drink scene, stating: “As a relative newcomer to Beverley, I have come to appreciate its thriving town centre life – especially the pubs and the Saturday Market. I am pleased to see so few empty premises that might otherwise detract from the town’s character.
“Repurposing this building, which appears to have stood empty for some time, can only be a positive step. The proposed plans seem tastefully designed and sympathetic to the surrounding frontages, helping to maintain the area’s charm.”

When the building was a jewellers it had a distinctive shop frontage and security installed in the 1990s. The property retains plenty of historic interest today, boasting a large window and pretty floor tiling. As part of the council agreement for the micro-pub, it will be limited to only open until 11pm Monday to Saturday, and until 10pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
More good news for the area
It is an exciting time for the Saturday Market area of Beverley. The Loungers group has recently submitted ambitious plans to the council to transform the nearby disused NatWest Bank into an all-day venue called the Sabado Lounge. The large new venue would be family-friendly & dog-friendly, and offer a space for community events, food and drink.
