Giles was one of City’s best in west London on Saturday

Sergej Jakirovic believes Ryan Giles needs to believe in himself more following his excellent showing against Chelsea on Saturday.

Giles was one of City’s best at Stamford Bridge, with the left-back continuing to show that he belongs in the Premier League.

The full-back wrapped up Portugal international Pedro Neto for large periods of the contest and he wreaked havoc in the Chelsea penalty area with his balls into the box, particularly in the second half.

Giles even left west London with an assist, given it was his ball into the box that Chelsea failed to deal with before Mo Belloumi turned it home emphatically.

Jakirovic was obviously pleased with Giles’ showing with the left-back impressing two weeks running now. However, the head coach also believes Giles has improvement left in him as he bids to further establish himself at the top level.

“He looked so comfortable but I always expect more from Ryan Giles,” Jakirovic said honestly. “He can do this and he should believe more in himself.

“He’s a very good player and a very fast player.

“Always after every game we have an analysis session and we are speaking about some details, some situations so he can improve, and he can be even better.”

Giles is one of City’s longest serving players at this point, having joined the club on an initial loan in January 2024, but he was joined on the field by a debutant on Saturday with Tim Iroegbunam making his first appearance in black and amber.

The deadline day signing from Everton looked tidy on the ball, playing his part as City claimed an unlikely point in the capital and Jakirovic believes he will have a big role to play for the Tigers moving forward.

“He’s good,” the head coach added. “He also come in from the injury from the Stuttgart friendly, he got injury. Now he’s good, his fitness is even better and he will help us a lot.”
