Another resident of a Hull care home is finding meaning and purpose by helping out her friends at Alexandra Court care home. Hull Live previously reported how Bob McKenna, a stroke survivor who has vascular dementia, had found a new reason to get out of bed by helping the home’s maintenance team with odd jobs, painting and redecorating.
Thanks to the Southcoates Lane care home’s dementia mapping scheme, which aims to discover who these residents were before they came to the home and what makes them feel fulfilled, fellow resident Christine is also feeling more independent and needed, a hark back to her working days in Hull.
Christine, who has always lived in the east Hull area, used to work in domestic services before she came to the home in February 2024. She has now taken on a role within the home, helping carers after mealtimes by collecting plates and dishes. This small task provides Christine with “purpose, independence and a sense of belonging”, according to the home. They say they’ve “made it official” by giving Christine her very own uniform, which she proudly wears while carrying out her role.
A spokesperson for Alexandra Court said: “Meaningful engagement is about looking beyond what someone can’t do and focusing on what they can do, what they enjoy, and what gives them a sense of purpose. Christine has always valued her independence. Having previously worked in domestic services, keeping busy, helping others and having a role to play has always been an important part of who she is.
“Through our dementia mapping work, we’ve been able to understand Christine’s interests, routines and strengths and find meaningful ways for her to continue doing the things that matter to her. It’s wonderful to see how understanding a person’s history, interests and strengths can open up opportunities for them to remain involved, valued and connected.”
The home’s staff also facilitate monthly shopping trips, which give Christine the opportunity to choose and buy the things she needs for herself. She enjoys picking out clothes and personal toiletries. And, of course, no shopping trip would be complete without an important stop at the bakery.
