Newland Social, above Molly Mangan’s on Newland Avenue, will become a Bavarian beer hall to celebrate Munich’s 161st Oktoberfest

A Hull venue will be transformed into a German beer hall for its first Oktoberfest celebration, serving steins, sausages and singalongs with a Bavarian band. Newland Social, the events space above Molly Mangan’s on Newland Avenue, will host an evening of German beer, food, dancing and live oompah entertainment on Friday, October 16.

Guests are invited to arrive in lederhosen, dirndls and other Bavarian dress as the upstairs venue is given a full Oktoberfest makeover. Tickets cost £20 and included in the price is a first stein of German beer, a bratwurst and a freshly baked pretzel, with music, games and plenty of audience participation also promised. At the centre of the celebration will be the Yorkshire Oompah Band, whose performances combine traditional Bavarian drinking music and oompah classics with modern party tunes. The band will also be donning their lederhosen. It is made up of two clarinets, a trumpet, a trombone, a tuba and drums. It will bring Bavarian favourites and oompah versions of songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody and Sweet Caroline.

Jack Mangan, co-owner of Molly Mangan’s and Newland Social, said: “It’ll be like walking off Newland Avenue and straight into a Bavarian beer hall. We’ll be transforming the whole room, with the food, costumes, music and atmosphere all working together. We’re going all in to create a proper experience. The Yorkshire Oompah Band don’t just stand onstage and play. They get everybody singing, dancing and joining in, and that is what will make the night such good fun. We want the whole room on its feet with steins in the air.”

Molly Mangan’s opened in December, with its upstairs area now being developed under the Newland Social name as a venue for live music, entertainment and special events. The new identity has only been in use for a matter of weeks, but a packed programme has already brought a wide range of events to the space, such as a bottomless offer to coincide with Hull City ’s defeat of Manchester United on the opening day of the premier league, and a kids’ bottomless brunch.

Newland Social manager Nicky Ponder said the Oktoberfest night shows what can be done with the venue. She said: “There’ll be traditional Bavarian music, well-known songs given an oompah twist, games and plenty of audience participation. We’re encouraging everyone to embrace it, get dressed up and arrive ready to join in. The performers will involve the whole room and make everyone part of the entertainment. Newland Social gives us the space to create something on a much bigger scale than an ordinary night in a bar. Once the room is decorated and full of people singing and dancing with a live oompah band, it should be an incredible sight.”

The event runs from 7.30pm until midnight and is for people aged 18 and over.

Newland Social is upstairs at Molly Mangan’s, 64–70 Newland Avenue, Hull. Tickets for the Oktoberfest night costs £20 and is on sale through Skiddle here. More information about Yorkshire Oompah Band can be found here.
