East Yorkshire Buses is introducing a package of bus service improvements from Sunday, September 6. These include more buses on Sundays, new direct links to Hull Royal Infirmary and the MKM Stadium, and more buses between Hull and Cottingham.
The changes are designed to give customers more choice about when and where they travel, while timetable adjustments across Hull and the East Riding will help improve reliability and reflect changing traffic conditions. Among the biggest improvements will be a significant uplift to Sunday services in Hull, making the bus an even more convenient option seven days a week.
More buses on Sundays
Customers travelling on Services 56 and 57 will benefit from twice as many buses on Sundays. The two services will combine to provide a bus every 15 minutes between Bilton and Hull, with buses then continuing every 30 minutes to Hessle on Service 57 and every 30 minutes to Castle Hill Hospital on Service 56.
There is another major Sunday improvement on Service 58, where the frequency will double from every hour to every 30 minutes. The improvements mean customers will have greater flexibility for shopping, leisure, work and visiting friends and family.
New links to Hull Royal Infirmary and the MKM Stadium
The changes will also create a number of useful new cross-city connections. As part of a simplified network, Service 58 will replace Service 45 and continue beyond Hull city centre to Castle Hill Hospital using the current Service 45 route.
This will create new direct links from Beverley Road to Hull Royal Infirmary and the MKM Stadium, allowing customers to make journeys across the city without needing to change buses in the city centre. Evening journeys which currently operate between Hull and the University will also continue through to Castle Hill Hospital, providing a more consistent route throughout the day and creating additional evening journey opportunities.
Services 78 and 79 will also be extended beyond Hull Interchange via Park Street to Anlaby Road (Silver Cod). The extension will create new direct links from Hedon to Hull Royal Infirmary and the MKM Stadium, opening up new journey opportunities for customers travelling from communities to the east of Hull.
More buses between Hull and Cottingham
Customers travelling between Hull and Cottingham will also have more choice. Alongside timetable changes to Service 104, East Yorkshire is introducing additional shorter journeys between Hull Interchange and Cottingham as new Service 105.
Together, Services 104 and 105 will provide four buses an hour between Hull and Cottingham during parts of the weekday and Saturday timetable.
Stuart Fillingham, commercial director at East Yorkshire, said: “We’ve had lots of requests from customers for better links to Hull Royal Infirmary and other key destinations across the city, so we’re really pleased that these changes will create new direct connections and make more journeys possible without having to change buses in the city centre.
“We also know Sunday is a great day to get out and about, whether that’s for shopping, seeing friends and family, heading for lunch or simply enjoying a day out. By doubling frequencies on some of our most popular routes, we’re giving customers much more freedom and flexibility to make those journeys. We want the bus to be an easy and attractive choice seven days a week.
“With more frequent Sunday buses, better connections and new direct links, these improvements are another great example of how it really can be better by bus.”
Timetables adapting to a changing Hull
Timetable adjustments will also be introduced on Services 24, 25, 35, 51, 52/53, 54 and 277. As well as improving reliability and punctuality, the new timetables reflect changing traffic conditions following the completion of the A63 works, including improvements to traffic flow along a number of routes through the city.
There will also be a change to Service 20 in Hull city centre. After serving Hull Interchange, buses will operate around the City Centre Loop via Ferensway, Spencer Street, Prospect Street, Albion Street, Bond Street, Savile Street, Vernon Street, Queens Dock Avenue and Carr Lane, before rejoining the existing route towards the Park & Ride site.
Journeys on Service 59 which currently extend to Bridgehead Business Park will be renumbered Service 58 as part of the wider simplification of the network.
Improvements across the East Riding
Changes are also being made to services elsewhere in the East Riding. Minor timetable changes will be introduced to some evening journeys on Services X46 and X47, helping address existing timetable issues and improve reliability.
In Goole, revised timetables will be introduced on Goole Town Services G1–G5 and Service 88, with changes designed to improve reliability and address some of the current issues around bus stopping arrangements on North Street.
Further changes to East Riding services are expected in November, following the half-term holidays and the end of the summer season.
More choice and better connections
The September changes form part of East Yorkshire’s ongoing work to make its network more useful, reliable and attractive for customers. By increasing Sunday frequencies, creating new direct links and adding more journey opportunities, the changes will make it easier for people to use the bus for work, healthcare, shopping, leisure and days out.
Customers are encouraged to check their timetable before travelling, as some journey times, routes and stopping arrangements will change. New timetables are available online now, with printed timetable leaflets expected to be available soon.
