Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has opened up on the brutal reality of playing three Super League fixtures in just nine days.
The Robins take on Catalans Dragons this evening at Craven Park as they look to build on their recent momentum after winning three games in a row in Super League. However, tonight’s clash marks the start of an unprecedented run of fixtures in which KR’s squad will be stretched to its limits.
After tackling Catalans, Peters’ side host Warrington Wolves on Tuesday night, a rearranged fixture from earlier in the season, before taking on Toulouse Olympique on home soil the following Saturday.
And, given the tight turnaround between games, they’ll be spending little to no time on the actual training ground during the period with recovery the be all and end all for the Rovers side.
“Add the Wigan [August 27] game in, it’s four, I think, in 13 or 14 days or something like that, so it won’t be a great deal,” Peters said when asked about the time he will have with his players. “It’s going to be mainly around recovery. It’s going to be mainly around freshening the guys up.
“We’re putting things in place where we do have a lot of trust in the guys, making sure that they do things when they’re away from the club.
“We certainly don’t want to overload them by bringing them in and too much video and all that sort of stuff but we still need to prepare them to play and we still need to make sure that they’ve got the right amount of info to go into games so they’re not going in blind.”
One way to minimise burnout and keep things a little fresher is rotation of course. Peters doesn’t have a plan set out, though.
“We’ll just look at it after each game,” Peters added. “We’ll look at performance. We’re going to look at how people, whether there’s anything wrong with them, they need a rest or whether we feel that someone else needs an opportunity.
“There’s no set plan now to say this is going to be Team 1 this week, Team 2, Team 3, nothing like that at all. We’ve got an idea, obviously, we know what this week’s going to be and then we’ll have a think about afterwards or look straight after the game of what we think we’ll go in with the Warrington game with.”
