On Wednesday evening, skywatchers across East Yorkshire were treated to an exceptionally rare celestial spectacle as the Moon moved between Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow across the area. Beginning at 6.13pm and reaching a dramatic peak around 7.09pm, more than 90 per cent of the Sun was obscured, dipping the early evening sky into a subtle twilight before gradually brightening again as it concluded just after 8.00pm.
As the deepest solar eclipse visible from our local area since similar events in 1999 and 2015, there were thankfully mostly clear skies enjoyed throughout.
While observers in parts of Spain, Portugal, Iceland, and Greenland experienced the full majesty of totality, the view from our region was still something special, particularly for those with special eclipse glasses or solar filters for their cameras.
This timelapse captures the gradual progress of the Moon as it passed over the Sun. All images were taken from a spot close to the Humber with a Dwarf 3 telescope and solar filter.
