City can look forward to League Cup action in two weeks’ time

Hull City will find out their opponents for the second round of the Carabao Cup on Monday, when the draw is made during the Plymouth Argyle vs Exeter City meeting at Home Park.
City have safely navigated what’s normally a troublesome first round after being given a bye because of their promotion to the Premier League.
All top-flight clubs, excluding those in Europe, of which there are quite a few, join the competition at the second round stage. Those teams competing in the Champions League, Europa and Conference Leagues will join in round three, which takes place in early September.
The second round remains regionalised, meaning City could face the likes of Burnley after they overcame League One newcomers Notts County on penalties at Turf Moor, Lincoln City, who dumped out Derby County at Pride Park, or Yorkshire rivals Bradford City or Barnsley, who both progressed through in their first round ties.
City’s Premier League rivals Leeds United are in the draw, as are Sheffield Wednesday, who overcame newly promoted Championship side Bolton Wanderers at Hillsborough.
The Tigers haven’t won a League Cup game since the Covid Pandemic, when they were winners on penalties at Leeds United at the start of their League One title-winning season.

Last term, the Tigers looked to have ended the hoodoo when they were 3-1 up at Wrexham, only to concede two Elliot Lee headers in injury time to draw 3-3, and then ended up losing on penalties.
The League Cup kicked off on Friday night with League Two outfit Walsall springing a surprise by winning 1-0 at Championship play-off hopefuls Bristol City, and inflicting a first league defeat on new boss Michael Skubala in nine months.
In a change to the usual schedule, the remaining games in round one were played over the weekend, easing the pressure on the start of the season for EFL clubs with the Championship, League One and League Two getting underway next weekend.
Tonight’s draw will be live on Sky Sports and is scheduled to get underway around 7:20pm, and will be hosted by 1904 Club regular David Prutton, Jobi McAnuff and Jamie Mackie. Round two ties are scheduled to take place week commencing August 25, sandwiched in between Premier League meetings with Manchester United and Coventry City.
