An East Yorkshire family firm is in the frame for a clutch of awards after its latest shortlist nomination. The team at Middleton on the Wolds business Soanes Poultry are celebrating after being named as a finalist in the prestigious York Press Food and Drink awards.
Soanes Poultry has reached the final in the Producer/Grower category at the inaugural awards, which celebrate the best of the area’s hospitality and food scene. The team face competition from Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil and Yorkshire Heart Vineyard.
Soanes Poultry’s MD, Ben Lee, said: “We’re proud of our Yorkshire provenance and it means a lot to reach the final of these new awards which celebrate the region’s thriving food and drink scene.”
Winners will be announced at a ceremony at the National Railway Museum in York on October 5. The ceremony will be hosted by food and drink broadcaster Nigel Barden, who added: “I look forward to the awards ceremony to discover who’ll be carrying off the accolades – they’ll need to be good!”
Soanes Poultry is a family-owned company which has been rearing and preparing chicken since 1947. With more than 180 employees it sells its chicken to butchers and independent retailers in Yorkshire, as well as to wholesalers and catering butchers nationwide.
It’s not the first award nomination the company has received in recent months. Before last Christmas, Soanes Poultry scooped an award for the sustainability of its chicken at the 21st annual Deliciously Yorkshire Taste Awards.
Its Higher Welfare Chicken won the Best Sustainable Product award, and its Grain Fed whole chicken was awarded Highly Commended in the Best Fresh Meat category in what is regarded as the largest food and drink awards programme in the region.
And in April this year it reached the final of the Best Poultry Product category in the annual Food Management Today awards, with its Yorkshire Christmas Cockerel, a different take on a Christmas dinner staple.
The same month saw the team celebrate reaching the final of the Poultry Business of the Year category in the National Egg and Poultry Awards.
The awards celebrate achievement, excellence and best practice in the sector and are backed by the British Egg Industry Council (BEIC), the British Poultry Council (BPC) and the National Farmers’ Union (NFU). The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London later in the year.
