Andy Last isn’t getting ‘results blind’ after Hull FC’s victory at St Helens and believes his side have played better this year and lost.
The Black and Whites ran out 32-18 winners over the Saints on Thursday night, with the 14-point margin enough for them to earn the Steve Prescott Cup for the 2026 season.
However, the interim coach has stated there are still fix-ups for his side ahead of what looks like another ‘winnable’ game against fellow Super League strugglers Castleford Tigers at the MKM Stadium on Friday night.
Last knows the importance of righting those wrongs in order to record back-to-back wins – a feat Hull haven’t achieved since March.
“I don’t want to become results blind, and sometimes I think we’re guilty of being results blind,” Last said post-match. “We’ve probably played better in previous games and not got the result.
“St Helens are missing lots of players and they are in bad form and low on confidence. We were able to put some phases of play together that caused them some problems. I’m pleased with the two points but I’m not going to get carried away with it.
“There have been lots of games that have been winnable for us this year and we haven’t got the win. We’ve just got to take care of performance – and at St Helens we took care of performance. We simplified things and the players executed the game plan accordingly and got their rewards for the hard work they’ve been putting in.
“I’ve spoken previously about how close we’ve been in matches and not getting the rewards that we have deserved but we got our rewards here. There are still some errors in there and some things that we need to tidy up and improve on but I’m just really pleased for the players and the supporters. We had a good number travel today and that was a victory for them.
“Castleford is a different challenge now. It’s at home in front of a big crowd and there’s a friendly rivalry there with Castleford. I’m looking forward to that game.”
