A £600,000 council-funded programme of road upgrades will begin in Beverley in August. Improvements to road surfacing will get underway at seven locations across the town, with most of the work being carried out during evening times. Beverley Bus Station will experience temporary closures while part of the construction is carried out, with alternative stops marked for the public’s use.
The works are due to start on Monday 3 August and East Riding of Yorkshire Council says the scheme is scheduled to take around nine weeks to complete, depending on the weather. The Council is to invest £600,000 in a programme.
Road surfacing, along with some kerbing and minor footpath improvements, is to be carried out at the following sites:
- New Walkergate, between Norwood and Morton Lane, and Sow Hill Road, between Ladygate and New Walkergate – due to start on 3 August for two weeks,
- Champney Road, between Lairgate and Cross Street – due on 14 August for one week,
- Grovehill Road and Railway Street, between New Walkergate to the level crossing at Beverley Station – due on 19 August for two weeks,
- Sample Avenue – due on 1 September for four weeks,
- York Road, between Severn Corners Lane and North Bar Without – due on 23 September for one week.
All of the work will be carried out under road closures and sign diversions will be in place.
When work is carried out on New Walkergate and Sow Hill Road, the road closures will be from 7pm until midnight, Monday to Friday. During that time, Beverley Bus Station on New Walkergate will be shut during the evenings with alternative stops available on Manor Road.
Then when work moves on to the other sites, road closures will be in place from 6pm until 11pm, Monday to Friday. The only work being carried out during the daytime will be resurfacing in Sample Avenue, with road closures in place there from 8am until 5pm, Monday to Friday. Throughout the scheme, access will be maintained for residents, businesses and the emergency services where possible.
Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “The road surfaces on these busy roads do need improving and we are glad we’ve been able to schedule the vast majority of these for evening works, to minimise traffic disruption as much as we can.” The work is part of the council’s scheduled programme of road maintenance and will be carried out by contractors DSD Construction Ltd. For bus service changes during these road closures, people are asked to visit the East Yorkshire Buses website.
