Hull KR star Arthur Mourgue has broken his thumb, Willie Peters has confirmed.
The 27-year-old suffered the injury in the second half of last week’s derby game against Hull FC, with scans showing the blow is more serious than the Robins originally feared.
The Frenchman is now awaiting results of a second scan to determine if surgery is needed or not, with Peters suggesting the injury is around five to six weeks and not season ending.
“Unfortunately, Arthur’s broken his thumb,” Peters confirmed. “We’ve had some scans, but we need to wait and see now whether that needs surgery or not.
“It happened during the game. He did it in the second half. He came off and reported it, but we initially didn’t think it was too bad, and then the symptoms told us it could be more serious than just a sprain. We sent him for scans and those scans showed that it’s a break.”
Asked if that’s Mourgue’s season done, Peters said: “No, hopefully not. My understanding is it’s five to six weeks. I don’t have the all the information yet.
“We’ve got another scan, which will tell us whether we need surgery or not. And then that determines how long he’ll be out for. We’re just waiting for the report.”
Mourgue has had a difficult season to injury, with the full-back or half missing a large chunk of the year with a tear in his pec.
“He’s had such an unlucky season,” Peters said. “Just talking to him before, he had minimal injuries in his time over in France and then obviously here he’s put a lot of games together and it’s just been unfortunate.
“There’s injuries that you can you can help, but certainly with his injuries, it’s just been unlucky. It’s unfortunately the part of the game we don’t want and don’t like.
“I never like seeing players getting injured and especially guys that go back to back with injuries and stuff like that. It’s not a great time for Arthur at the moment, but he’s a great kid, he’s a great person, and he’ll be okay.”
Peters has confirmed that Ryan Hampshire will now come into the Rovers team to play Bradford Bulls this Friday night.
“The way we play is with two full-backs,” Peters said. “We play Tyrone May on the ball, and then we play Mikey (Lewis) and Arthur, usually our first choice. And when Broadie (Jack Broadbent) comes in, he plays that fullback sort of role.
“We had Arthur there last week. So again, it’s two full-backs. So this week we’re going to go Ryan Hampshire. If it was Tyrone, then we’d certainly be probably leaning towards Jack Charles. But it’s just the way that we play.
“We think Ryan’s the best suited for that role because as I say, Tyrone’s that on the ball half and him and Jack, and the way we play, it’s probably too similar. But yeah, it’s a decision that we had to look into and we think just the way we play, it’s probably the easier transition.”
Elsewhere, Peters also had injury updates on Dean Hadley and Jesse Sue.
“Jesse is going to need the week off this week,” Peters said. “He battled through, and as I said afterwards he’s too tough for his own good.
“He’s one of those where sometimes you have to make the decision for him. It’s best that he doesn’t play because it’s going to be an ongoing sort of injury for him.
“I’d like to thing he’d be back next week. We just got to see where he’s at. He’s been playing, but then he’s hobbling around after games and he needs a rest.
“Dean’s got a little issue with his hamstring. He’s going to get some scans.“
