Animal rights lawyers have launched a legal case against Hull-based supermarket meat supplier Cranswick following an undercover operation at one of its Lincolnshire farms. The Animal Justice Project – a vegan animal rights organisation that campaigns for the end of animal farming – has taken action against Elsham Linc Limited, a subsidiary of Cranswick which runs North Moor Farm near Market Rasen.
Last year the group brought to light footage of alleged mistreatment of animals. It gathered evidence between February and March 2024 at the farm, which had recently been acquired by Cranswick at the time.
Elsham Linc Limited faces 23 alleged offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, the Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing (England) Regulations 2015 and the Animal By-Products (Enforcement) (England) Regulations 2013.
Ayesha Smart, legal director of Lawyers for Animals, said: “Having carefully considered the available evidence, we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence to bring these charges and that it is in the public interest to prosecute.”
Elsham Linc Limited has been summoned to appear at Nottingham Justice Centre on August 26. Cranswick did not wish to comment.
