Willie Peters has moved to explain his decision to leave Rhyse Martin out of his Hull KR side to face Hull FC on Thursday evening.
The Robins got back to winning ways at the MKM Stadium as they beat the Black and Whites 34-20 and they did it without the presence of Martin, who was named as 18th man on the day.
The decision saw Jai Whitbread given the opportunity to step back into the fold in the back-row, while Martin, who played at centre against Warrington Wolves last weekend watched on from the sidelines.
The Papua New Guinea international endured a difficult afternoon at the Halliwell Jones Stadium while playing out of position and Peters felt it was necessary to take him off during the contest in Cheshire.
He also made the call to drop Martin from his 17-man squad completely, with Arthur Mourgue taking on kicking duties in his absence.
“At the end of the day Rhyse is aware of where he’s at, he’s important to our squad and has been important to our squad,” Peters said on his decision to leave Martin out.
“There’s a few areas he needs to work on, he’s aware of it and it’s always helpful when the player sees where they’re at rather than pinpointing that he needs to work on this and this.
“I like to get player feedback and we probably shared similar feedback of where he was at last week. We just needed to look at some other options this week.”
Martin will be doing all he can to regain his spot in the side over the next week before KR host Bradford Bulls on Friday night and with just eight regular league games to go before he leaves Craven Park, with the intention of hanging up his boots after the World Cup, he’ll be determined to work his way back into the fold and go out on a high.
