‘Our crisis teams and health-based places of safety are vital to our communities’

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust has maintained its “Good” overall rating following a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection of its mental health crisis services and health-based places of safety in Hull. The Trust operates a crisis resolution home treatment team and two health-based places of safety in the city.
They also provide telephone lines which can be used to access mental health services. The crisis resolution home treatment team is multidisciplinary, operating over a 24-hour period and offering assessment of people in a mental health crisis.
Intensive support and treatment interventions are provided to people within their own homes, as an alternative to mental health hospital admission. A health-based place of safety (HBPoS), also known as a 136 suite, is a designated space where individuals detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act can be safely assessed.
This secure environment allows health professionals to determine the best course of action for the individual’s mental health needs, whether that is further assessment, treatment or discharge. The inspection of these facilities found that patients received compassionate, responsive and high-quality care from skilled and dedicated staff.
Patients and carers spoke positively about their experiences, describing staff as kind, respectful and supportive during times of crisis.
The CQC highlighted a number of strengths within the services, including:
- Strong leadership and governance
- Effective multidisciplinary working
- Positive patient and carer experiences
- A culture of learning and continuous improvement
- Good partnership working across health and care systems
