A major refurbishment plan is set to go before planners for a Hull leisure centre. Ennerdale Leisure Centre shut in May of last year as energy efficiency works got under way and it was hoped to reopen this summer.
However, works to the swimming pool unearthed significant issues which will need rectifying before it can reopen. As a result, plans to bring forward a raft of improvements are set to go before Hull City Council‘s cabinet.
If the cabinet agrees to the plans, it will see a wide range of works carried out to help sustain the leisure centre for the long-term. Multiple sections of the centre’s swimming pool pipework were found to be in a significantly poorer condition than initially expected, triggering the new proposals.
After extensive investigation and careful consideration, a full replacement of the swimming pool pipework is now recommended, rather than just partial repairs, which could result in further disruption, emergency closures and additional costs in the future.
The council said that approach, alongside works to fully replace the existing original glazing, funded by Sports England, as well as refurbishment of the building to serve up better facilities for leisure centre users, is the most cost-effective solution for the project.
They said it will secure the long term future of the much loved leisure centre. They confirmed that, given the go-ahead, it will mean Ennerdale Leisure Centre will remain closed into 2027 until completion of the improvements.
Cllr Jackie Dad, deputy leader of the council, whose portfolio includes leisure centres, said: “Ennerdale Leisure Centre is somewhere so many people have used over the years and we are all keen to see it back open again so that residents can start to use once again.
“I appreciate it has been a frustrating time waiting for this scheme to be completed and, like all users of the site, I am extremely keen to see it back up and running again as soon as possible. The council apologises for the continued inconvenience and would like to thank all residents and customers affected for their patience.
“Coming forward now with a strong scheme for the site, one that would help to ensure the long-term future of the facility, is the right plan and would help reduce the risk of further repairs in the future. Once complete, I am confident Ennerdale Leisure Centre will be significantly enhanced and will be enjoyed and valued by its customers for many years to come.”
Regular customers, clubs and visiting organisations of Ennerdale Leisure Centre will be contacted regarding use of other facilities in the city.
