Willie Peters is support of the comments made by both Matt Peet and Sam Burgess earlier in the week regarding Super League’s gruelling schedule.
Both Wigan and Warrington are going through rough patches in regards to injuries, with Wigan, who were already without the likes of Bevan French, Liam Farrell and Liam Marshall losing three more last weekend.
Warrington could be set to welcome a handful of players back this weekend, but they remain without a raft of players, too.
As such, on Tuesday both head coaches took the opportunity to speak out about the load and the sheer amount of games players are being asked to play across the calendar year in a season without any bye weeks.
Burgess’ words come with Warrington due to face off against Hull KR on a Tuesday night next month in what is a rearranged round two fixture. As such, both teams will be asked to play three games in the space of just over a week.
And Peters used that as example when explaining why he agrees wholeheartedly with the sentiments of Peet and Burgess.
“I back that, there’s no doubt in the world,” Peet said when asked about the comments of both men.
“You talk about welfare of players, in a few weeks’ time Warrington and ourselves are going to be asked to play three games in a week towards the back end of the season after we’ve had such a huge year.
“It’s unfortunate for Warrington, it’s not their doing that they had us round two, we played in the World Club Challenge and now they have to play a make up game as well and put themselves at a higher risk of injury.
“It’s a difficult part of the season. There’s no doubt, you need to have byes in the year. We spoke about it personally that we didn’t want a bye because we wanted to play in the Challenge Cup final and obviously go to the end, but it certainly has its toll on every single player and teams.
“It’s outrageous to think that players can play all season, play three games in a week towards the back end of the season and not have any injuries.
“At the end of the day, it’s about the product, making sure we are an entertaining product and the way you do that is by making sure you have the right players playing and players that can entertain.
“If you’re going to go into squad numbers 29,30,31 when players aren’t ready and you’re playing youth way too early, it can make an impact and there’s no doubt it impacts the players. We need to make sure going forward that that changes.”
