The Ship Inn on Hodgson Street will open its doors for England’s early hours World Cup clash with Mexico on Monday, promising free chips to all fans if England come out on top

An independent pub in Hull is opening its doors for England’s 1am clash with Mexico on Monday. The Ship Inn, on Hodgson Street, will be welcoming fans for the game, giving local supporters somewhere to watch the match together in a traditional pub setting, and free chips will be on offer if the result goes England’s way.
The independently run pub says the decision reflects its “commitment to the local community rather than commercial convenience”. The pub will be offering free Ship speciality chips to all fans if England win, and the pub will be open from 12 noon on Sunday and remain open throughout the game “until everyone goes home”.
Dean Kirk, Licensee of The Ship Inn, said: “For us, this wasn’t a difficult decision. When England are playing in the knockout stages of the World Cup, people want to experience it together. Pubs have always been places where communities come together to celebrate moments like these. We’ve been serving our community for over 200 years, and opening our doors for England is simply part of what being a community pub means.”
The Ship Inn will be serving fresh bacon sandwiches, hot sausage sandwiches and its famous Ship Speciality Chips throughout the night, alongside a range of traditional real ales, Veltins lager and an extensive selection of low and no-alcohol drinks, including Erdinger Alcohol Free, Bud Lime 0.0% and Peroni 0.0%.
The pub hopes the decision highlights the important role independent pubs continue to play within local communities.
Dean said: “Independent pubs don’t have the marketing budgets or buying power of the national chains. What we do have is the freedom to make decisions based on what our customers want. If our community wants somewhere to watch England together, that’s exactly what we’ll provide. This is a real David versus Goliath story. We’re a single independent pub competing with businesses that operate hundreds of venues across the country, but independent pubs have always succeeded by putting people first. That’s something no head office can replace.”
The Ship Inn has been around for more than 200 years. England supporters are invited to arrive before kick-off, with the match shown live on the pub’s big screens. The England v Mexico game, which takes place in Mexico City, will kick off on Monday 6 July at 1am. The Ship Inn is based at 43 Hodgson Street in Hull.
