Former Scotland striker and Everton legend Duncan Ferguson admits he’s surprised that Oli McBurnie was left at home by Steve Clarke.
McBurnie blasted 19 goals to help City win promotion to the Premier League, including the 95th-minute winner in the Championship play-off final at Wembley last month.
Despite a terrific season leading the line for City, McBurnie’s form wasn’t enough to earn a recall to the Tartan Army, with Clarke preferring Lyndon Dykes and Che Adams over the 29-year-old.
Ultimately, Clarke’s decision to ignore McBurnie and Ipswich Town striker George Hirst left him red-faced as Scotland’s pitiful effort at the World Cup cost him his job, resigning in the wake of their 3-0 defeat by Brazil.

Scotland managed just one goal in the tournament, with that deflected John McGinn effort coming in the narrow 1-0 win over minnows Haiti, and they were dumped out despite finishing third in their group.
Clarke resigned, and as the fall-out from their tournament continues, Ferguson is the latest to question why the prolific McBurnie’s five-year international exile wasn’t ended.
“Oli McBurnie, he could’ve been in the squad,” Ferguson told the Rest is Football podcast. “He was a top goalscorer in the Championship for Hull who are now up in the Premier League.
“George Hirst, at Ipswich, who scored about 15 goals for Ipswich and he’s up in the Premier League now. So, there are two strikers that will be in the Premier League this year. They should’ve maybe been playing or been in this squad.”
