Two consultation events are set to be held by port operators Associated British Ports

Plans by Associated British Ports (ABP) for an onshore wind turbine at Port of Hull are set to go before the public. ABP – owner and operator of the four ports of Immingham, Grimsby, Goole, and Hull – has been busy reducing its emissions by more than 40% since 2014, with renewable energy generation across it bases playing a key role.
To boost its decarbonisation efforts and to help control electricity costs for the ports, ABP is forging ahead with plans to construct onshore wind turbines at Grimsby, Immingham, and Hull. The firm will continue to invest in solar generation, but onshore wind will have the ability to generate power 24 hours a day, all year round.
Now the public are being invited to attend a consultation as part of its plans to install onshore wind turbines at the Port of Hull. Plans are being developed for one turbine at Hull, producing up to 5MW of power.
This would be in addition to the two turbines that were submitted into planning in March 2024 and would mean three turbines in total at the Port if all are consented and constructed, providing up to 13MW of installed onshore wind in total.
Back in March 2024 Hull port operator Associated British Ports (ABP) has applied to build a wind turbine at King George Dock which will be up to 125m tall – just 35m shy of the Humber Bridge ’s iconic reinforced concrete towers. The structure would stand at the dock’s northern gateway and have three blades.
Planning documents stated it was part of efforts to power the port site with renewable energy in light of climate change. It was a twin application submitted alongside one for a 125m wind turbine on the East Riding side of the docks. Bosses say the turbines are important to help control the cost of electricity and directly decarbonise port electricity and hopefully provide a foundation for industrial growth.
The consultations will take place at The Freedom Centre on Preston Road, Hull on Tuesday June 30 between 12.30pm and 7pm, and Wednesday July 29 between 12.30pm and 7pm. The events will allow visitors to view the proposed plans in full, and talk to members of the project team.
ABP supports Government ambitions to achieving Net Zero and in 2023 launched its own £2bn plan for Energy Transition growth and Net Zero 2040. Called Ready for Tomorrow, it looks to meet challenges and grasp opportunities. Its investments so far include the creation of the largest commercial rooftop solar array in the UK at the Port of Hull, electric vehicles and cranes across the group and a new fleet of more fuel-efficient pilot boats.
