After Sauaso Sue’s red card in the defeat to Wakefield Trinity, Willie Peters has backed the Hull KR prop strongly – and dropped the strongest hint yet that the veteran could re-sign for 2027.
Sue was sent off during the recent dramatic defeat to Wakefield Trinity and later handed a Grade D striking charge by the Match Review Panel.
The 34-year-old prop will now sit out this week’s clash with York Knights, as the Robins look to bounce back at their fortress home of Sewell Group Craven Park.
While accepting the ban, Peters was quick to defend the veteran forward and suggested there could be more to come from him yet with his current contract set to expire at the end of 2026.
Sue made the move to East Hull ahead of the 2023 season from Newcastle Knights in Australia and has since cemented himself as one of Super League’s fiercest forwards, racking up 92 appearances for Rovers to date.
“We accept it [the ban]. Obviously, as I said after the game, it was out of character and Jesse got it wrong,” Peters said.
“Jesse is a massive part of what we do, he’s so important to our squad with the way he starts the game and what he does in and around the place.
“I’ve spoken many times about how we appreciate him, and how I appreciate him as coach with what he does for this team.
“He was one of the first people I brought over at the time and initially, we thought it was going to be a two or three-year deal.
“Then he extended, and who knows, the big fella might go round again next year, and deservedly so.
“He’s still on top of his game, that’s for sure.”
