Samoa head coach and Perth Bears assistant Ben Gardiner has been linked with Hull KR interest.
Hull KR remain confident in their search for a new head coach despite reports in Australia claiming a leading NRL assistant has rejected interest in succeeding Willie Peters.
All Out Rugby League understands that Perth Bears assistant coach Ben Gardiner was among the leading candidates considered by the Robins, with discussions having taken place regarding the vacancy.
However, it is understood no formal offer was made to Gardiner, or any coach at this stage as Rovers continue to finalise their plans.
Australian outlet Code Sports has reported that Gardiner, who is also head coach of Samoa, has decided to focus fully on his role with the Perth Bears ahead of the club’s inaugural NRL campaign next year.
Current Hull KR boss Peters will leave Sewell Group Craven Park at the end of the 2026 Super League season after being appointed the inaugural head coach of the PNG Chiefs. The NRL’s latest franchise will enter the competition in 2028, with general manager Michael Chammas already assembling the club’s first squad.
St Helens captain Matty Lees has been confirmed as a signing, while Jarome Luai became the club’s first official recruit before fellow NRL stars Alex Johnston and Connor Watson also agreed deals.
Gardiner is set to work under Perth Bears head coach Mal Meninga, who confirmed interest when speaking to media in Australia.
“Ben had some interest, but he’s turned that down, I believe,” the former Australia coach said.
Hull KR’s position remains unchanged, however, with no candidate having been formally offered the job as the club continues its recruitment process.
