Oliver McBurnie has been backed to be ‘in amongst the goals’ next season for Hull City with the Wembley hero tipped to make an impact on his Premier League return.
The 29-year-old City star is back in the English top flight for the first time in three years, having scored six goals in 21 Premier League appearances for Sheffield United in the 2023/24 season, as the Blades crashed out of the top flight. After a campaign in La Liga that brought five goals for Las Palmas in the Spanish top flight, the Scotland international plundered 19 for the Tigers this season, including the all-important match winner in the 95th minute of the play-off final.
Goals won’t be easy to come by next season in the Premier League, especially for a Hull City side tipped to find it tough back in the elite league. While that may be the case, Kevin Phillips, who knows a thing or two about scoring goals in the Championship and Premier League, believes McBurnie won’t have a problem causing opponents some issues next season.
“It will be difficult because the quality is so much better. I’ve spoken about Oli McBurnie a lot this season. I think he’s a good player. He’s almost like that old-fashioned centre forward that likes to back into people,” said Phillips.
“He likes to go up against people. And that would be no different in the Premier League. So he gets himself into good areas. Certainly most of the goals he scored this season, he’s in and around the 18-yard box. That’s how he got his goal at Wembley, you know, in the right place at the right time.
“It’s just whether the opportunities can be created enough for him to score enough goals. But he’s certainly a player that can score goals, he’s got the experience now. So I’m not saying he will recreate it, but he’ll be in amongst goals next season, that’s for sure.”
