Pressure mounts on Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer

  1. The Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, is facing increasing pressure from within the Labour Party to stand down after a disappointing set of local elections for the party. At the time of writing, more than 80 Labour MPs have called on Sir Keir to resign either at once or set out a timetable for his exit. Amid the turmoil, the Prime Minister, held a key Cabinet meeting in which he reportedly vowed to continue to fight for his position in Number 10.
  2. The Labour Party experienced huge losses in last week’s local elections, both in Hull and across the country more generally. In Hull, the party held just one of the eight seats it was defending, while around 1,500 Labour councillors lost their seats across England. The party does, however, remain the second largest group in the Guildhall with 16 councillors. After losing a number of notable councillors from his group, the Labour leader in Hull, Cllr Daren Hale, has called on Sir Keir to “do the right thing – and go.”
  3. The MP for Hull East, Karl Turner, who was suspended from the Labour Party earlier this year, has also called for Sir Keir to resign. In a statement, the MP wrote: “In East Hull, residents told me directly that they would not vote Labour while the Prime Minister remained in office. For many, the proposed changes to the Winter Fuel Allowance were the moment they concluded that Labour could no longer be trusted.” Mr Turner added that he urged the Prime Minister to not block Andy Burnham from standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election, advice which the Hull MP says, “fell on deaf ears.”
  4. The Greater Manchester Mayor, Mr Burnham, is one of the bookies’ favourites to replace the Prime Minister, although he would have to find a way back into the House of Commons first. The Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, and Angela Rayner, the former Deputy PM, are also seen as likely leadership candidates if a leadership contest arises.
  5. The leader of Hull City Council, Liberal Democrat Cllr Mike Ross, has called upon Hull’s remaining Labour MPs to follow in the footsteps of Cllr Hale and Mr Turner, and call for the Prime Minister to resign. Dame Diana Johnson, MP for Hull North and Cottingham, has called for stability.
