Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds has been snubbed by Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic ahead of the play-off climax in the Championship this weekend

Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic has jokingly said he wouldn’t want Ryan Reynolds to portray him in a Hollywood film. Hull and Wrexham head into the Championship’s final day on Saturday with their play-off aspirations hanging in the balance.

“We will see what will happen,” Jakirovic said to the BBC ahead of the final round of games on Saturday. “It’s a very dramatic but enjoyable also, but if you make a movie now, you would not write this scenario at the end of the season. But this is the Championship, this is why it’s the toughest league in the world, maybe.”

When asked who would portray him in a cinematic depiction of the play-off battle, he added: “Not Ryan Reynolds! I like him, but I need more Terminator, something like [Arnold] Schwarzenegger or [Sylvester] Stallone, Rambo. I like Daniel Craig, James Bond, he’s my favourite and Pierce Brosnan – I watch every James Bond movie.”

When examining the various scenarios for the play-off race, it’s perhaps understandable why Jakirovic rejected the co-owner of his rivals. Wrexham’s margin for error has changed significantly after a 3-1 defeat to champions Coventry City, though they still maintain an edge over Hull.

The Tigers suffered a 2-1 defeat against Charlton Athletic at The Valley on Saturday and have now gone six fixtures without victory, collecting just four points from a possible 18.

Wrexham face promotion-chasing Middlesbrough on Saturday at the STōK Cae Ras, while Hull host Norwich City. Derby County, sitting eighth on 69 points, are also in contention and welcome Sheffield United at home.

The Rams currently boast a superior goal difference to both Wrexham and Hull, sitting nine goals better off. Put simply, Wrexham need to match or better the results of both Hull and Derby this weekend.

Should Wrexham and Hull finish level on points, Wrexham currently hold a marginal advantage in goal difference. The next deciding factor, goals scored, edges slightly in Hull’s favour, with the Tigers having netted 68 goals compared to Wrexham’s 67.

The final tiebreaker, head-to-head record, also favours Hull, having defeated Wrexham twice in the league this season. Reflecting on his side’s prospects, Jakirovic said: “For me, it is unbelievable we cannot win one game in this part of the season. Every team in this league had those moments in their season, unfortunately we have that moment now.

“We have a very small chance (of reaching the play-offs) because if Wrexham take one point it is over. It is over but it still isn’t mathematically over. You have hope but first we have to win our game. It is now a very big problem for us. Now it is not in our hands.”

Meanwhile, Reynolds has consistently made clear that reaching the pinnacle of English football remains his ultimate ambition for Wrexham.

“You have high expectations in long term, but our goal was to listen and learn and at that point, you don’t know what you’re saying, if that’s just going to sound preposterous or naive,” he told Sky Sports.

“But our goal was always the Premier League. I mean, we’d be foolish to not aim for that. I didn’t think we would be here this quickly; however, sometimes the ball bounced our way. Other times, this team’s grit, determination and character is what really kind of pushed them across, even more so than just skill.”
