A coin expert has shared three rare £2 coins – including a mule error coin worth up to £1,000
People have been urged to check their loose change for three rare coins that are worth considerably more than their face value. This collection could potentially net over £1,000 from enthusiastic collectors.
However, you’ll need to look out for specific years, and in one case, a highly sought-after minting error. In a video uploaded to TikTok, an expert known as the Coin Collecting Wizard disclosed exactly what to look for. He detailed the three valuable coins to his more than 250,000 followers, saying: “Have you got any £2 coins?
“Check out these worth big money – the last one will blow your mind.” He first instructed viewers to hunt down a coin called the Commonwealth Northern Ireland.
Owing to an exceptionally limited mintage, this particular piece can command up to £65 in good condition. He said: “This £2 coin known as the Commonwealth Northern Ireland is the rarest £2 coin you can find in your change.
“With only 485,000 minted it is worth around £35 in uncirculated condition and £65 if brand new.” This 2002 coin is one of four distinct designs, each showcasing a different flag representing the four UK nations.
The Northern Ireland version features the Northern Irish flag on the reverse (tail side), alongside a moving figure clutching a banner.
He then went on to discuss the 2011 King James Bible coin, which displays the opening words from the Book of John on its tail side. The golden rim of the coin bears the inscriptions “King James Bible” and “1611-2011”.
The expert went on to say: “Only 975,000 King James Bible £2 coins are out there in your change. Released in 2011 this is becoming scarcer to find but if you are lucky enough to find it then it is worth around £4 in circulated condition and £20 if brand new.”
Topping his list as the most prized coin was the Lord Kitchener coin featuring a distinctive error. “£1,000 for this £2 coin,” he said. “Yes, I told you this one will blow your mind.”
“This is the Lord Kitchener £2 from 2014 but you need to find a rare error version known as a mule error, which makes it worth a grand. If yours doesn’t have the words ‘two pounds’ on the Queen’s side then you have found the rare error.”
This particular coin was minted to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. In February 2024, an example of this coin sold at auction for £1,000.
