Everthorpe Hall was most recently used as a prison officers’ clubhouse

A former Victorian manor house most recently in use as a clubhouse for prison officers is to go under the hammer next month. Everthorpe Hall will appear in auctioneers Bond Wolfe’s sale with a guide price of £55,000-plus.

Everthorpe Hall is in Beck Road, Everthorpe, near Brough. Its sale on behalf of the Ministry of Justice will be livestreamed on Thursday, May 14.

Gurpreet Bassi, chief executive of Bond Wolfe, explained that the former manor house was originally an “impressive” building, although it was now in poor condition. The property, along with associated outbuildings and external space, could be suitable for redevelopment, subject to planning permission.

Mr Bassi said: “This impressive building was erected as a manor house in 1871 and was bought by the Government just after the Second World War. It was converted into a ‘borstal’, a term which later became known as Young Offenders Institutions, and eventually became part of Everthorpe Prison.

“When Wolds Prison was constructed next door, it was combined with Everthorpe Prison and was renamed HMP Humber. The manor house within the grounds served as accommodation for prison officers and their families, and then functioned as a social club and training centre until its closure in 2008.

“The manor house itself is now in a poor state of repair, with a disused tennis court at the south side of the site. There are also outbuildings to the north, currently occupied by the prison farm connected to HMP Humber, with some office space and former stables used as storage.”

Everthorpe Hall is on a site that extends to approximately 0.96 acres on the edge of Everthorpe village, near North Cave and the Eight Acre Lake diving site, just off the A63.

Anyone interested in the property is advised to make enquiries with East Riding Council planning department to explore any proposed use.
