The victim suffered a fractured forearm bone and a suspected fractured wrist

An angry troublemaker viciously attacked another man with a metal bar – breaking a bone in his forearm – after suspecting him of stealing his son’s bicycle. The unsuspecting victim claimed that he merely found the bicycle but a heated confrontation between the two men in the street quickly turned violent.

Blood “squirted” out of the victim’s injured arm and he later said that the pain that he suffered was “10 out of 10” on a scale of seriousness and the worst that he had ever endured, Hull Crown Court heard. Callum Hart, 28, of George Street, Bridlington, but recently in custody on remand, admitted wounding the man on October 7.

Ashleigh Metcalfe, prosecuting, said that the man was returning to his Bridlington home at about 11.30am when he was approached by Hart. The two men knew each other. Hart accused him of stealing a bicycle from his son but the man denied this and claimed that he had found it.

Hart took a metal bar out of his car and swung it at the man, missing the first time, but hitting him on the arm the second time as the victim raised his arm to protect himself. Blood squirted out as the man was hit again and he fell to the ground.

Hart put the metal bar back in his car. The victim’s daughter came outside after hearing a commotion. Hart swung the bar towards her and continued brandishing it. He used it to damage a pane of glass in the front door of the family’s home.

The attack victim later said that he could not move his arm and there were visible lumps under his skin. He described the pain that he suffered as “10 out of 10” and it was the worst that he had ever endured.

He was taken to Bridlington Hospital where he was found to have suffered a fractured forearm bone and a suspected fractured wrist. Hart took the bicycle with him as he left, the court heard.

He was arrested on October 16 and he made no comment to all questions. He had convictions for 24 previous offences, including assault in 2015 and 2017. His most recent conviction was in 2024.

Holly Thompson, mitigating, said that Hart had been in custody on remand since October 18. “He has done nearly six months inside,” said Miss Thompson. This would be a deterrent and a punishment for him.

Hart, who was appearing in court via a video link from Hull Prison, was jailed for one year but, because of the time that he had already spent in custody, he was expected to be released very shortly. He was given a three-year restraining order.
