John Prescott’s son, David, is standing for the Greens in Hull

The Green Party has launched its campaign ahead of Hull’s local elections in May. For the first time, the party is fielding a candidate in each of the wards holding elections in the city.

Since Zack Polanski became the leader of the Green Party in September 2025, the party has rocketed in the polls. Under Mr Polanski’s premiership, the Greens have gone from a relatively fringe party to regularly outpolling the traditional two ‘big parties’ in British politics – Labour, and the Conservatives.

After the party won the Gorton and Denton by-election in February, the local Hull and East Riding Green Party said elections in Hull ‘can’t come soon enough.’ The party is now hoping to replicate its success in Greater Manchester across the country in May’s local elections, including getting its first councillors in Hull’s Guildhall.

On May 7, one third of Hull City Council will be up for election. All of the council’s wards except Kingswood and Ings will be holding votes.

Supporters of the party and its 19 candidates met outside The Deep on the banks of the Humber on April 1 to launch their campaign. Despite the party currently having no councillors in Hull, Independent councillor Gary Wareing attended the event to offer his support. The Greens do have a pair of councillors in the East Riding.

One of the party’s candidates is David Prescott, the son of the late Lord John Prescott. The former Labour MP for Hull East, Lord Prescott, served as Tony Blair’s Deputy Prime Minister from 1997 to 2007.

David, who is standing in the Sutton ward, had been a Labour Party member from the age of 17 before joining the Greens in late 2025. He told Hull Live: “My values haven’t changed, but I think the Labour Party has. After listening to Zack Polanski and the Greens, I thought their party was more in tune with my values.”

Another of the party’s candidates is Jamie Strudwick, who is standing in the University ward. A full list of the candidates will be published once the nomination period closes.

Hull City Council‘s current political weighting is as follows:
