The new overpass above the A63 is set to open on Thursday, March 26, National Highways has confirmed. The new underpass opened to traffic this weekend, as the over half decade-long project winds down.
This weekend, traffic was directed onto the new A63 underpass for the first time. The £355m National Highways scheme is set to connect Ferensway and Commercial Road at street level by taking a section of the A63 Castle Street underground.
Traffic has now been moved onto the new underpass whilst the slip roads and overpass remain shut for some final bits of work. The overpass and slip roads will be opened to traffic from Thursday morning, essentially putting an end to the six-year project.
Once the road elements of the scheme are completed on Thursday, a number of minor residual works will still be undertaken. These include landscaping works around the site.

We were invited by National Highways to take a look at the new overpass before it opens later in the week. The road will allow motorists to once again to turn right onto the A63 from Ferensway.
Fran Oliver, the senior project manager for the A63 Castle Street scheme told Hull Live that some overnight closures may be needed towards the end of March to allow for some final bits of work, such as the introduction of large electronic signs to alert motorists to any lane closures or incidents.
The A63 Castle Street project is one of a number of major multi-year projects in Hull that are set to be completed in 2026. This year will also be key for the Hull Maritime project. The Spurn Lightship and upgrades to Humber Dock Street have already been unveiled whilst Queen’s Gardens is also set to welcome people once again in the coming weeks.
