The influential centre-back collected the Tigers’ first red card of the campaign at the weekend

Charlie Hughes will miss Saturday’s Yorkshire derby with Sheffield Wednesday this weekend after the FA turned down Hull City’s appeal against his sending off at West Brom.

Hughes was dismissed just before half-time when he tangled with Jed Wallace outside the City box, albeit wide on the right side of the Hawthorns pitch.

Referee Josh Smith immediately flashed the red card and left City, who were already a goal down to Josh Maja’s strike, to play the rest of the game with 10 men, and they were eventually beaten 3-0.

City head coach Sergej Jakirovic revealed after the game that the club intended to appeal against his one-match ban, but it’s understood that the appeal has since been unsuccessful, meaning Hughes will miss the visit of the already-relegated Owls in the final outing before the international break.

Under the rules of denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity (DOGSO), a red card is just a one-game ban, and therefore, Hughes will only sit out this weekend’s fixture.

Speaking to Hull Live after the game in the Black Country, ex-Baggies defender Semi Ajayi admitted he could see why the decision was made by the referee, though he felt it was harsh.

“At the time, I thought it was fifty-fifty,” the Nigerian defender said. “I can see why he’s given it, but I still think there’s a lot of football that needs to be played before it becomes a goal-scoring opportunity. I don’t think he (Wallace) necessarily shoots or scores from that position. I think he still needs to make another pass. Myself and Eags (John Egan) are back. I can see why he’s given it, but I do think it’s a little bit harsh.”

That dismissal was City’s first of the season and Hughes’ second of his fledgling career, but he will return to the fold for the Good Friday trip to Oxford United.

Meanwhile, it’s understood Lewie Coyle’s ankle injury isn’t as bad as first feared. The City skipper was helped off the Albion pitch in what turned out to be a chastening first half for the Tigers. The defender left The Hawthorns in a protective boot, but scans are not thought to have revealed extensive damage. It’s likely Coyle will miss Saturday’s game, with it hoped he will be back for the pivotal Easter weekend.
