It could temporarily halt Year 12 intakes

A school in Beverley has written to parents and carers to consult over suspending its Sixth Form provision. Longcroft School and Sixth Form, in the North West of the East Riding town, is seeking feedback on plans to halt Sixth Form intakes for up to two years.

In a letter, the school‘s head teacher explained that, when the current Year 11s joined the school five years ago in 2021, the intake was “a historic low” with just 86 pupils having moved through the school to Year 11. The letter goes on to say “current projections following all efforts to recruit for Year 12 in September 2026 are significantly low.”

The letter also claims that East Riding Of Yorkshire Council intends to remove “all of the Sixth Form facilities and A-Level only teaching spaces in order to utilise the area of the site, land and buildings, in which they are located.”

This, the letter says, “has caused serious concerns regarding the capacity for the school to sustain an attractive offer to Sixth Form pupils in the short term.” It is also said the school could face “an associated financial impact,” until a solution is found.

The consultation suggests the following:

  • September 2026: No Year 12 intake. Current Year 12s would continue into Year 13 as usual and would be unaffected.
  • September 2027: Likely to be no Year 12 intake again meaning there would be no Sixth Form students for the 2027/28 academic year.
  • September 2028: Year 12 intakes return.

In reference to potential use of the school’s Sixth Form land/buildings, an East Riding Council spokesperson has said there is “over 50 per cent surplus physical space on the school site.” They added: “There is no suggestion that the council would remove facilities without re-providing them elsewhere within the school site.”

East Riding Of Yorkshire Council’s full statement is as follows: “The council understands the context for this consultation, which is regrettable, but understandable based on projected low pupil numbers in the next Year 12. Maintaining a Year 12 intake with such low numbers in September 2026 would create a financial deficit that would impact the whole school. The school is therefore consulting on parent, staff and resident views and the local authority will work with the school around any future steps, including a change to the age range of the school.

“The school has cited use of school buildings on the site as a reason for not admitting a Year 12 in September 2026. Longcroft School has significant capacity, with over 50 per cent surplus physical space on the school site. The school and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, working with the Department for Education, are in the process of considering best use of the space across the school site, that will benefit children and young people in the East Riding.

“Utilising the surplus place for specialist and alternative provisions would require potential changes to the site. However, there is no suggestion that the council would remove facilities without re-providing them elsewhere within the school site – where that provision is required for pupils on roll at the school. Any spaces that are currently present and required in the sixth form block, would be re-provided elsewhere within the existing school buildings.

“We understand that the school’s consultation has created some uncertainty for young people and their families, and will work to support any young person that needs advice or guidance at this time. We would also encourage parents, carers, residents and others to respond to the school’s consultation by April 3, and we look forward to governors providing the full extent of consultation responses to the council in due course.”

Following the end of the consultation window on April 3, the school says a decision is expected on the week commencing May 4. Any changes will be implemented in September 2026.
