‘After a busy day at the seaside, you can return to the peaceful tranquillity of this stunning little rural nook’
As plenty of people begin to plan stay-cations, Express reporter Claire Schofield took her family to an East Yorkshire cottage that made for a wonderful weekend break.
As a fan of weekend UK getaways, I’ve stayed in all sorts of hotels, resorts, B&Bs and holiday homes, and I’m not exaggerating when I say The Roost at Field House Farm is the best one ever.
Winter may not be the best time to hit the beach in the UK, but a little break by the sea is good for the soul, no matter what the time of year. The darker months can feel never-ending, and the cold weather can be quite isolating, making you want to hibernate indoors until the sun finally comes back out to play. By the time March rolled around, I felt myself itching to get away, and an escape to the seaside felt like the perfect remedy for my winter blues.
So despite the rain and the bracing wind, I packed up the car and, with bucket, spade, husband and toddler in tow, and headed off to Bridlington.
We stayed at a beautiful, five-star-rated cottage at Field House Farm, which is located within a mile of Bridlington’s sandy north and south beaches (named as one of Yorkshire’s top-rated beaches on TripAdvisor), making it the perfect base for exploring the shores of Yorkshire’s east coast.
Our cottage ‘The Roost’ offered all the cosy warmth you could dream of, with exposed brick walls, high roof beams, a woodburning stove, and quirky little nooks throughout that previously served as a snuggly spot for chickens to lay their eggs.
It was full of character and charm, yet it had its modern touches with a well-appointed kitchen, en-suite bathroom complete with a rainfall shower, and a smart TV for when you’re ready to settle in for the night.
The cottage, which is rated 5* by both Premier Cottages and Visit England, boasted two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, making it ideal for a family getaway and as it’s all set on the ground floor, it’s easily accessible and meant the toddler could easily run around and explore his new home for the weekend.
The owners, John and Angela, were welcoming and friendly and went out of their way to help us get connected to the WiFi on arrival. We especially enjoyed the personal touches they made, like providing a loaf of Yorkshire parkin and a bottle of fresh apple juice that had been made on the farm when we arrived – it was just the pick-me-up we needed after a long drive, and those small gestures made it feel like home.
We were also provided with a travel cot and a high chair, which made the packing experience much less stressful, as holidaying with a toddler is not for the faint-hearted, and it comes with a lot of gear.
There are several other cottages on the site, which is based on a working farm, plus a small playground, which is ideal if you’re travelling with little ones. Our two-year-old loved it and spent a good hour running around outside, determined not to be stopped by the chilly weather.
The cottage feels like the perfect home from home, and it has that air of luxury that you hope for when you’re on holiday, except you don’t have to travel miles on a plane to get it.
It’s also ideally placed for exploring Yorkshire’s east coast, with Bridlington beach just a 10-minute drive away, and also perfectly located to visit York, Whitby, Scarborough and even Hull or the Dales, giving you easy access to the seaside and many of Yorkshire’s tourism highlights. At nearby Bridlington, you can stuff your face with fish, chips and ice cream, walk for miles along the sand and brave a chilly paddle in the waves.
And after a busy day at the seaside, you can return to the peaceful tranquillity of this stunning little rural nook, where you can kick back in front of the fire and unwind with a cup of tea. Now what could be finer than that?
