Work is set to get underway later this month which ‘will include several major upgrades’

A full closure will begin at the end of the month on a major Hull route as improvement works get underway. Hull City Council has announced the next phase of its road upgrade programme, focusing on National Avenue and County Road North.

The works, which are expected to take around eight weeks in total, will be carried out in three phases. These include a full road closure of National Avenue between the junctions of County Road North and Bricknell Avenue from Monday, March 30 until Friday, April 24.

The second phase, which runs concurrently with the first but starting a week later from Monday, April 6 until Friday, April 24, will also see the footpath at the junction of County Road North and National Avenue closed to allow for resurfacing and reconstruction works. From, and including, Saturday, April 25 until Sunday, May 3, the junction will be open as usual to road users, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Finally, the third phase will see temporary traffic signals put in place from Monday, May 4. However, the left turn onto County Road North from National Avenue will be closed. National Avenue itself will remain open, aside from this restricted turning movement. This phase is set to be completed by Friday, May 22.

The scheme follows the completion of major works on Endike Lane and at the Cottingham Road and Hall Road roundabout. It will include full resurfacing of roads and footpaths, improvements to cycle lanes, and the installation of new kerbs to enhance the area’s infrastructure.

To reduce congestion and improve safety, the council will also install new controlled crossing facilities, widen a pedestrian refuge island, and alter traffic signals to improve traffic flow. PBS Construction Limited, a family-owned company based in Hull, has been chosen to deliver the works to ensure continuity from the previous stages of the programme.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: “Residents in west Hull have already seen the benefits of the improvements on Endike Lane and at the Cottingham and Hall Road roundabout, and this next phase will build on that progress. National Avenue and County Road North are key routes which people rely on every single day, whether it’s getting children to school, travelling to work, or visiting friends and family.

“By improving this busy route, we aim to tackle wear and tear before it becomes a bigger problem, reducing the risk of accidents, and making journeys smoother and safer for everyone. We know that roadworks can be frustrating, especially on such key routes, and I want to thank residents and businesses for their patience and understanding.
