The Tigers ace was left bemused by the decison to disallow Kyle Joseph’s goal on Saturday

Regan Slater says he wants to stay at Hull City and would welcome the chance to have talks with club bosses over extending his deal beyond next summer.

City took the 12-month option on Slater’s deal earlier this week, which gives them time to hold discussions with the 26-year-old’s representatives.

While no talks have yet taken place, sporting director Jared Dublin told Hull Live recently that he hoped a longer-term deal could be agreed with the player who arrived on an initial loan from Sheffield United in 2020 once those discussions begin.

Head coach Sergej Jakirovic is keen to see Slater tied down to a longer-term deal, and while the club are under no immediate pressure to get a deal done quickly, the in-form talisman hopes he can be rewarded for a fine campaign.

“Yeah, definitely,” he said when asked about his option year being activated. “Like I’ve always said since I’ve come here, it’s a place that I enjoy coming into day to day, with a great group of lads, so I’m happy that I’m going to be around them again next year.

“I’ve not been offered a contract, so that’s all I can say really. Of course, I would love to be offered one, but I’ve not. I think my football’s probably showed that I’ve enjoyed working under him (Jakirovic) as well. I’ve just mentioned the lads there, I just enjoy playing football and enjoying doing it with this group of lads. It would be nice (to be offered fresh terms), but yeah, like I said, I can’t really say much else. I’ve not been offered a contract.

“I believe there’s a couple of factors as to why not. We obviously need to know where we’re going to be as a team next year, and hopefully that is the Premier League. It would be nice to be rewarded, but, as of now, I’m going to be here next year, and I’ll just concentrate on my football and try to finish the job.

“It would be nice to be sorted now and be rewarded for good work. That would be great, but also the summer’s coming quick, so it’s not like I’ve got to wait too long.”

Slater was speaking after City’s 3-1 home defeat to Millwall on Saturday, and the midfielder had his say on the controversial moment in the game when Kyle Joseph’s header was ruled out for an apparent foul by Oli McBurnie on goalkeeper Anthony Patterson. That goal would have seen the hosts deservedly go 2-1 up after a terrific first half.

Referee David Webb disallowed the goal, much to the frustration of McBurnie, Slater, Jakirovic and the majority of the 22,000-strong home crowd.

“It’s obviously disappointing when you put in a performance like that and create the amount of chances that we created, and not come away with three points, but unfortunately, it’s football. We made a couple of errors that led to goals, which is frustrating, but like I said, it’s football and it also happens. I feel like on a different day, if we take one of them chances first half that we created, it’s a completely different game, because I felt like we were by far the better team.

“I don’t know how you can get that decision wrong. It’s just frustrating because if that game goes 2-1 in our favour, I feel like we don’t look back from there. I feel like we then go three or four, especially with the way that the momentum was in that game. We were massively on top and we don’t look back from that.

“He’s (Webb) just said that Ol’s (McBurnie) fouled the keeper. Ol’s just stood his ground. There’s no foul there, so hopefully he (Webb) looks back on that one and doesn’t make that mistake again.”
