A Which? expert has explained which parking tickets can be ignored

Returning to your car to find a parking charge notice slapped across it can be deeply annoying, but according to one specialist, some parking tickets “can go straight in the bin”. In a clip posted on social media, Which? video reporter Lucia Ariano explained: “Some parking tickets can go straight in the bin. Really.”

The rest, she added, can be disputed. Lucia said that motorists can challenge a parking ticket if signage is unclear, if the penalty exceeds £100, or if there are extenuating circumstances such as illness or vehicle breakdown.

She went on to say that if the parking firm isn’t affiliated with a recognised trade body – either the British Parking Association or the Independent Parking Committee – you can ignore the ticket.

Lucia added: “[The company] won’t be able to get your details from the DVLA to make you pay.”

Should the parking operator be accredited, she continues in the footage, motorists can submit an appeal letter accompanied by supporting evidence including photographs of inadequate signage and proof of any extenuating factors, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.

Statutory authorities, such as local councils and police forces, have the power to issue parking tickets, and these typically require payment. On its website, Which? provides free template letters for those wishing to contest a parking ticket.
