Colder conditions are set to ‘temporarily take charge’ after a gloomy and wet spell

After “seemingly incessant rainfall” in recent weeks, temperatures are set to take a tumble again. The Met Office has issued a snow and ice warning for parts of East Yorkshire as colder conditions move in later this week.

The forecaster says outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow are “likely to lead to icy surfaces and some travel disruption”. The warning, which runs between 7pm on Thursday and noon on Friday, currently covers more westerly inland parts of our region.

However, chillier conditions are expected across the whole area with the mercury dropping below freezing point during the nights heading into the weekend along with daytime highs between 4 and 5C from Thursday. Temperatures are set to recover somewhat early next week with highs heading towards 8 or 9C by Monday.

In the area covered by this week’s yellow-level weather warning, the Met Office says: “Outbreaks of rain will fall as snow over higher hills initially, before the snow starts to fall to lower levels through Thursday evening. Any settling snow will mainly be confined to high ground, above 200 metres 2 to 5 cm is possible, and above 300 metres, a few locations may see as much as 10 cm.

“The rain and snow is expected to clear south during the early hours of Friday with temperatures expected to fall quickly as skies clear, leading to ice on untreated surfaces.”
