It will not cost anyone a penny to charge their car up until January 30
The owner of a petrol station known as one of the cheapest in East Yorkshire has begun a new deal for customers with e-vehicles. Until Friday, January 30, it will be completely free to recharge them.
JET in Long Riston, about nine miles north of Hull city centre and six miles east of Beverley, has been independently owned by the Blake family since the 1960s. Its owner, Oliver Blake, who took over the reins when his dad retired, has spoken about how being independent allows them to pass savings onto customers.
He said the new deal celebrates the recent addition of a 360kV fast charging unit. Two vehicles can charge at the same time.
Oliver said: “It is literally plug in and play, no app required or nothing like that. You plug the charger into your vehicle, click ‘go’, charge your car and you are up and gone and away. That’s until the 30th of this month.”
The deal has been popular. Oliver said the figures were showing they have used the same wattage for electric vehicle charging in half a day as other sites achieve in an entire week.
“Is has been doing really well and really well received,” he added. “We have always wanted to give value to our customers, whether that is fuel, or another type of fuel now, which is EV.”
News of the free recharging has spread. On Friday, Oliver said, at one point, there were two cars charging while six were waiting in the queue.
But he said the modern electric vehicles charge so quickly it is not a problem. “If you have a higher charging potential car, you are looking at 15 or 20 minutes. It can soon charge that car up.
“Yesterday a guy had a brand-new Audi on 10% charge – it took him 18 minutes and he was done. It absolutely flies out and then he is up and done and on his way.”
