City beat Southampton for the second time this season

Under-fire boss Tonda Eckert used XG to suggest his Southampton side deserved something from their 2-1 defeat against Hull City.

The Tigers scored twice in the first half through Kyle Joseph and Charlie Hughes, with home fans booing their team, manager and owners throughout the game.

Despite fans booing the substitution, Ross Stewart came off the bench to score what proved to be a consolation goal, as City secured a first league double over the Saints for the first time since the 1950/51 campaign.

Southampton again dominated the ball and carved out a couple of good chances in the first half but rarely tested Ivor Pandur in the second period, with City seeing out a victory that moved them back into the top six.

“There are two stories to the game. You can see the amount of chances that there was and there only needs to be one winner, but the reality is a different one,” the German mused.

“They are cheap goals, very cheap goals, both of them. I still think we should not concede two goals at home. I still think that there’s enough chances, even with two goals conceded today, to win the game, and we didn’t.

“It’s just not really taking us anywhere; the story is the same. I think that in all of the games there have been chances for us to be 2-0 up. There have been chances for us to be 3-0 up and then everything becomes easy, but football games don’t always have that storyline.

“They are different at times, and then it’s down to us to manage different flows of a game, even though we don’t want to go down in a game, but the game is still there for the taking. If we wouldn’t create anything I would agree with you, but the truth is I think we have 2.7xG today.

“I think the chances that we created are enough to win three games of football today, not only one, but the reality is a different one. If I had the feeling that we are not creating anything with the way we play, I think that we need to change, but we do.

“The amount of chances today is… We have six clear-cut chances, and then we have 27 shots on goal. In the end, we score only one and concede two.”
