Di Wightwick plans to bring old classmates together

A former Bridlington schoolgirl hopes to reunite with old classmates at an event she is planning later this year. Di Wightwick said she was hoping to trace ex-Bridlington School students with the help of Hull Live.

She said: “Will you be celebrating your 60th birthday between September 1, 2025 and August 31, 2026? If so, this reunion is for you.

“Come along and reminisce with classmates in the 1977 school year.” Di said: “The reunion will commemorate the first year of comprehensive education at the amalgamated Bridlington High School for Girls and Bridlington Grammar School for Boys.”

The Class of ’77 School Reunion will be held on Saturday, August 29, at Bridlington Rugby Club, at 7.30pm. Di said: “All former students who began their education at the Lower School in September 1977, and partners, are welcome.

“In 1977, the Bridlington Comprehensive School was located on two sites – first and second year students at the Lower School buildings, in St John Street (High School for Girls) and the rest at the Upper School (Grammar School for Boys) in Bessingby Road. Miss Daisy Matthews was the headmistress at the Lower School and the deputy head was Mr Lepper.

“In the summer of 1978, Daisy retired and was replaced by Mr Geoffrey Howarth who became headmaster across both sites. Please spread the word about the reunion if you are still in touch with school friends.

“Retired school teachers who taught at both school sites will also be attending this event.”
