The City star is eying a place in Sunday night’s final
Semi Ajayi will go into Wednesday night’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against Morocco with the whole of Hull City behind him, keen to see him progress into the final showdown this weekend.
Boss Sergej Jakirovic will watch on as Ajayi takes his place in the Nigeria side that looks to make it into Sunday’s final when they take on the hosts in front of a partisan home crowd at the 53,000-capacity Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
The City defender has played a crucial role in helping the Super Eagles get to the final four, and Jakirovic is keen to see the central defender progress into Sunday’s AFCON final, though they face the hosts and the weight of a host nation behind them.
Ajayi’s success with Nigeria has seen him miss a flurry of games for City, and he won’t be back in contention for Championship action until later this month, but Jakirovic says it’s a big thing for the Tigers, and for the experienced 32-year-old himself.
“It’s a big thing for us, for him, for the club, and I hope he will win the tournament now he is in the semi-final,” the Tigers head coach told Hull Live. “I hope he will go until the end because he’s playing well.
“I have watched every game, and they have a very, very good, almost fantastic team for me, Nigeria, so they are very good, and I hope he will come back healthy.”
