The Lawn Tennis Association describe it as the ‘fastest growing sport in the world’

Planning permission is being sought for padel courts in Barton-upon-Humber. The new facility would be in units of the Trade Yard off Falkland Way, Humber Bridge Industrial Estate.

A gym recently got planning permission next door, called Rise & Defy. Padel is an increasingly popular racquet sport, which blends elements of tennis, squash and badminton, played on enclosed courts with glass and iron mesh walls.

It originated in Mexico. It has spread across the Americas and Europe in recent years and is increasingly common on UK shores.

There are already padel courts in Lincoln and Hull. The Lawn Tennis Association even describes it as the “fastest growing sport in the world”. The doubles form of the game is more widespread.

Hartlepool-based Padel is Life Clubs Ltd is the applicant behind the proposed padel courts in Barton. Three double padel courts and one single padel court are proposed.

Each double court at the Barton facility will be 20m by 10m, roughly half the size of a standard tennis court, while the single court will measure 20m by 6m. “The padel court facility will provide a significant and wide-ranging benefit to the local community, supporting health, wellbeing, social inclusion, and local development,” a statement of community benefit submitted with the application says.

It adds that local sports clubs, schools and community groups can rely on the new facility for training, competitions and activities, “if desired”. Members of the public have until January 8 to comment on the application.
